YMCA Activate America® is an innovative public health initiative of the YMCA movement aimed at addressing the nation’s growing health crisis by making healthy living a reality for millions of Americans. One of the most important health issues in the country today is America's epidemic of obesity and inactivity. The YMCA is engaging people and communities across the country to better support health seekers of all ages who are struggling to achieve and maintain well-being of spirit, mind and body. Through this initiative, YMCA’s are influencing and motivating health seekers to make positive changes in their pursuit of well being and helping to create and sustain healthier communities.
The YMCA is the largest nonprofit organization in the country with a core Mission focus on healthy living. With more than 2,500 YMCA's and 20.1 million members, YMCAs touch the lives of so many people, with the potential to reach even more.
The Somerset Hills YMCA is also deepening our commitment to community wide efforts to promote healthy living and intensifying their collaboration with other community partners to magnify community benefits. In our community, the Y has made a strong commitment in the battle against this epidemic. A new expanded facility, innovative programming for all ages, qualified experienced staff, strong leadership and philanthropic support have enabled the Somerset Hills YMCA to continue to advance its work in helping our community address growing obesity, chronic disease and a health care crisis.
The Somerset Hills YMCA promotes Activate America® through our everyday happenings at our facility and through special events hosted throughout the year. Each spring, we host YMCA Healthy Kids® Day—a free interactive special event that employs fun, engaging and creative activities to encourage children and families to adopt behaviors that support healthy lifestyles. In September, we participate in America on the Move Week with the YMCA. Community events inspire everyone to take steps as part of our annual drive to motivate people to take small, daily steps to increase their level of activity and improve their overall well-being.
The Somerset Hills YMCA has teamed up with various local organizations to help take this initiative outside our facilities and into the community. The YMCA of the USA has enlisted national partners to provide expert advice on the development of YMCA Activate America. These partners include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Steps to a Healthier US initiative, Harvard School of Public Health and Stanford University School of Medicine. In addition, organizations such as Disney Channel, Eli Lilly, Kellogg Company, JCPenney Afterschool Fund, Kimberly-Clark Corporation and PepsiCo have been instrumental in supporting this initiative.
