The Somerset Hills YMCA adult swim instruction offers programs for all ability levels:
Level I A Beginner Basics
For the beginner swimmer, who is NOT able to float independently, finds blowing bubbles a challenge, and is fearful of deepwater. In a small class setting students will learn how to relax in the water and gain confidence with basic floating and flutter kicking skills on their front and back, learn proper breath control, and begin basic stroke drills.
Level I B Advanced Beginner
Basic freestyle rotary breathing skills will be taught in this class through drills that help the swimmer gain a better understanding of how to balance their body in the water to make rotary breathing more relaxing and effortless. Resting strokes and treading water will also be introduced.
Level II Intermediate Stroke Development Clinic
This class will help swimmers develop skills to make freestyle a more restful and relaxing stroke. Drills will be incorporated that redefine the proper rotary breathing technique through learning to balance on their side during each breathing cycle. In addition, this class will focus on strengthening swimmers’ flutter kick, introducing backstroke and elementary backstroke skills, refining breath control skills, and strengthening treading water skills. Swimmers will be encouraged to swim lengths of resting strokes in between rotary breathing lengths to start swimming for longer periods of time without taking a break.
Level III Advanced Stroke Clinic
Swimmers will refine their rotary breathing skills and begin to do simple interval training sets. Backstroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke will also be incorporated into the program. An introduction to lap swimming etiquette will also be discussed.
