Tyler Mussel didn’t hesitate for one moment when the opportunity to help at the Somerset Hills YMCA’s SNAP (Special Needs Adult Program) event presented itself. Already enjoying the program as a participant, Tyler who is gentle, engaging and determined, took the initiative and began helping Amy Margaret-MacDonald with the monthly meetings that bring together young adults with special needs, aged 15 and older, wanting friendship and socialization.

Tyler, a 20 year old student majoring in theater at the RVCC, works part-time at King’s in Bernardsville and spends a lot of his spare time at the YMCA in between work and studies. “I just love being involved here at the Y and helping others gives me a great sense of satisfaction,” says Tyler. “To my mind, there is no choice to make; it’s just feels so natural to want to get involved for the benefit of others”.

Planning meetings, shopping for supplies and chaperoning the events take a considerable amount of time and Amy Margaret-MacDonald would be at a loss without him. “I rely on Tyler so much now as the group gets bigger and we embark on new adventures, such as going to the movies, barbeques, a trip to the circus or a dance,” said Amy.” During our last event, Tyler handed us some crumpled bills explaining that he had made a little extra that week and wanted to donate it to the program. We were so shocked to count $103; Tyler insisted on us keeping it. Does it get any better than that?” Tyler is a wonderful example of selfless giving and sacrifice and the Somerset Hills YMCA is so blessed to have him as part of the family.
