COSAC is a non profit agency helping to improve the lives of people with autism as well as educating others. Awards are given to those who have made an impact in the media or legislature, who have performed outstanding service in the community, who spread awareness of autism or who have had an impact as a volunteer.
Art, nominated by Loretta Boronat whose family has participated in Saturdays in Motion in the past, received the Community Service Provider of the Year Award. It is given to a resident of New Jersey who provides services in an educational, community or recreational setting. The person also must demonstrate exemplary service, which increases independence and achievement, and Art has done just this with Saturdays in Motion.
Saturdays in Motion, which Art created 16 years ago at the Somerset Hills YMCA, is a volunteer-run program that serves over 70 children with autism and their families. The children come with their families to the YMCA where they enjoy over an hour of fun and games in the pool or using the gymnastics equipment. The families have the opportunity to share their feelings and talk with others about their struggles, hopes, and triumphs.
“I am honored to receive this award. I felt that there was a need for a program like Saturdays in Motion so that children with autism could have the opportunity to have fun in a safe and nurturing environment. This program has proven to be an invaluable asset to the children and families involved. It helps to establish a much needed support network for people affected by this disorder," said Art.
Art’s son, Will, who is 19 years old, received the Individual Achievement Award. This award recognizes the achievements of a New Jersey resident with an autism spectrum disorder. “He is a great role model for other people with autism,” says Art. Will was a co-captain of the Ride High School swim team last year. He also swam for the Somerset Hills YMCA team. He has volunteered in the Saturdays in Motion Program for many years. Will will attend college in the Fall. Will’s activity in the community, as well as his growth in self-help, work and independent living skills made him the perfect candidate for receiving this award.
Along with Saturdays in Motion, the Somerset Hills YMCA offers a variety of other programs and services for people with special needs, and their families, that help connect them with others, get them active in the community, and encourage fun and friendship.
