The Special Needs Adult Program is a social group designed to bring together young adults with special needs, aged 15 and over, using the Somerset Hills YMCA as the venue.
2008 get togethers:
Valentine’s Day dance where twenty participants danced, enjoyed refreshments and camaraderie;
March offered a trip to the circus;
April a viewing of the movie, Grease
in May, a barbeque;
the June event saw the group participate in a Flag Day 5K run followed by dinner and relaxing together where Melissa Riggio, who sadly passed away in April after a courageous battle with leukemia, was honored.
Currently a volunteer-run program that is partially funded by the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign and through an initial donation from one of the participating families, SNAP is open to any young adult with special needs aged 15 and older.
As the number of young adults attending SNAP grows, Amy’s commitment to serving this group of friends strengthens because she has witnessed the good effect it has on the participants. SNAP also serves more than just the young adults; it is becoming something of a support group for the participants’ parents who get an opportunity to meet and get a few hours’ break to go and do something for themselves.
