 Volunteer Spotlight

With almost 1,000 volunteers working alongside dedicated staff in 2007, the Somerset Hills YMCA is the definition of a community organization. Volunteers form the backbone of the Somerset Hills YMCA and the selfless effort they put forth is an integral part of our mission. Watchung Hills High School Freshman Carly Borinsky is a fine example of the talented individuals who donate their time and energy to the Y.

Carly came to the YMCA through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program in January and works at the Woodland Elementary School Age Child Care program. Two times per week, Carly participates in a variety of activities with the children including basketball, kickball and running. When asked about the benefits of volunteering, Carly cites the response that she gets from the children. “I really enjoy playing with the kids. I love seeing them happy and joyful. One of the best things is when the children come up to me and tell me how their day went.”

Carly was drawn to the YMCA based on her experience with her younger sisters. “I like to work and engage with children, something I learned from my experience with my sisters. This experience has been extremely rewarding and I look forward to continuing volunteering next year.”

Carly, an active tennis player and runner, also participates in several other community service activities. She hopes to continue her education upon graduation from high school and is considering a career in education or medicine.
